Geek Speak: Jogith Chandran

07:37 Posted by Anonymous No comments
With the season of Navratri long gone and the season of Diwali fast approaching, these are quite some festive times for us all. However, back at Kidobotikz, an exciting event is already underway. A contingent of Kidobotikzians departed last evening to the city of Calicut. They are taking part in the annual Tech Festival Tatva hosted by NIT Calicut. What’s so special about this event one might wonder?

Well, it is a college festival and the teams from Kidobotikz are usually the only all-school teams that participate in this event.

Meanwhile, we pick up from where we left last week. Last sunday we spoke with Jyotsna who was there as a part of the team preparations for FTC. This week, the entire team including Jyotsna are actually at Calicut for Tatva, except for one. He’s here taking care of the FTC-related activities in the absence of the other members. A rather tall and well mannered chap, who impresses one and all with his knowledge of roboting. Meet Jogith Chandran, who defines the word Smart with his techy accent and hipster glasses. He is our geek for the day.

Hey Jogith! Do you mind introducing yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone! I am Jogith S Chandran. I study in the 9th grade at Smart Minds Academy, and since last sunday, a graduate of Kidobotikz.

Congratulations on your graduation. Must’ve been a very exciting experience.

Can you tell us how you became associated with Kidobotikz?
It’s one of things that just happen and you look back at it with happiness. I’ve always been a robotics aficionado. However, wasn’t sure where to learn the coveted subject from. One fine day, I happened to chance upon the poster of Kidobotikz in the vicinity of my abacus class. As soon as I got home I told mom about it and convinced her to get me enrolled here. There’s been no looking back ever since.

When I actually came here, it was during the summer. Interestingly, they had a summer camp here. And I managed to complete 4 month’s worth of course in less than 10 days. It really impressed me that I was able to learn all this.

That’s interesting. What was your outlook towards robotics before you joined Kidobotikz and how has it changed now?
Before joining Kidobotikz, my assumption was that robotics was a highly complicated and sophisticated subject that could be learnt only by the select few. But after joining, that perspective of mine changed completely. Much to my surprise, I realized that robotics was as basic a subject as anything and anybody with the right teacher and right learning material could master the concepts of robotics. The credit goes to the way to Kidobotikz and their faculty for making robotics such an interesting subject for me.

That’s an interesting perspective. How goes your preparation for FTC?
Well, we are currently looking into how we can brand ourselves and get a few sponsors onboard. That way we can connect with some established brands in the industry when we represent that nation at FTC. We all meet on a weekly basis to discuss about our individual roles and responsibilities.

So, what are your plans for the future? Any field of interest that you are looking forward to work in?
My dream would be to pursue higher studies in Robotics at MIT. Beyond that, I intend to find a niche R&D role for myself in the consumer electronics or robotics industries. This is my long term vision and I intend to work upon it with vigour.

Geek Speak: Jyotsna

07:34 Posted by Anonymous No comments
For those of you keeping tabs on robotics events, here’s some interesting news! The annual edition of the First Tech Challenge has been announced and a contingent from kidobotikz is gearing up for participating in this event. Considered as the ultimate event in robotics for school students, it aims to promote STEM learning. With participation from across the globe, FTC attracts some of the best talents from schools and also boasts of support and sponsorship from some industry leaders such as NASA, Apple etc.

A team of Kidobotikzians have decided to take part in this event and are gearing up for the same. With brainstorming sessions being held every weekend, the students are upping the game to make their presence felt at this high stakes event. We meet one of the enthusiastic participants of this team. Even as you ask her questions about their brainstorming sessions, plans and ideas, she jumps up in excitement to talk about the roles she has taken up and how she is looking forward to use this opportunity to connect with important people and gain exposure. Meet Jyotsna, the queen of the FTC contingent and our geek for the day.

Hey Jyotsna! Do you mind introducing yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone! I am Jyotsna. I study in class 9 of La Chatelaine Junior College. Since of yesterday, I am a graduate here at Kidobotikz.

Can you tell us how you became associated with Kidobotikz?
It’s a lucky twist of coincidence, I must say. I’ve always been interested in robotics. But never really had a clue as to where to start. Luckily my sister used to take her music lessons in this locality ands she happened to chance upon the banner of the Kidobotikz center. She was the one who suggested it to me and then I joined Kidobotikz.

That’s interesting. What was your outlook towards robotics before you joined Kidobotikz and how has it changed now?
Before joining Kidobotikz, I was under the assumption that robotics was a highly complicated subject with some tough technical concepts. Much to my surprise, I realized that robotics wasn’t as complicated as being portrayed. On the contrary, it was a field that required us to know many other concepts before we could start pursuing. That is the significance of robotics. It is a subject which integrates other subjects.

That’s an interesting perspective.

How goes your preparation for FTC? And how do your parents feel about you participating in FTC?
Well, it wasn’t the smoothest of starts. Mom was completely sold on the idea of me going to FTC. Dad was initially sceptical but he too agreed after learning about the significance. So, I have the green signal.

As far as the preparation are concerned, the team has now been formed and is ironclad. We all meet on a weekly basis to discuss about our individual roles and responsibilities. I am currently in charge of understanding the complete set of rules that have been laid down for participating in the event. And as a member of the team, it is my responsibility to convey these rules to my team mates. Apart from these I am also tasked with readying the theme for our participation and the name of our team.

What are your key plans for FTC? And what is the most important takeaway that you wish to bring back from FTC?
Well, our ultimate goal is to participate in the final to be held in the US. To get there, we need to win events at Coimbatore and New Delhi. So, all our plans and strategies are being planned accordingly.

The key takeaway would be to feel satisfied with our performance and uphold the values that FTC promotes- gracious professionalism.

So, what are your plans for the future? Any field of interest that you are looking forward to work in?
My role model has always been Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam. So, I’ve always been impressed by the work of ISRO and DRDO. When I was a young girl, I wanted to become an Astronaut like alpana Chawla. But now my focus for the future has shifted. I intend to develop the Indian Space programme by joining as a scientist at ISRO.

Geek Speak: Hariharan

06:10 Posted by Anonymous No comments
Terms like “Electronics enthusiasts” and “Robotics hobbyists” are becoming commonplace today. With the availability of low cost electronic components and engaging online content which helps them learn the various tricks and trades of robotics, more and more students are entering the hitherto unchartered areas of robotics and electronics, while they are still high schoolers. Nowhere is this change more pronounced than at Kidobotikz where you can find every other 8th grader turning the screws on a robot they developed from scratch. The ones not doing the same are probably doing an interesting project using IoT.

The result is an ever growing pool of Kidobotikzians who develop wonderful working models and robots, not to mention the accolades these people receive after developing concepts like the AgriBot and the SwachhBot. With us today is a robotics pro whose demeanor and way of talking exude confidence in every which way. He’s only in class 8 but has a way of answering questions that surely will make people think twice if they were talking to someone of age 14. Meet Hariharan, a proud Kidobotikzian and a robotics pro who is our geek for the day

Hey Hariharan! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone! I’m Hariharan of class 8 at Chinmaya Vidyalaya. Here at Kidobotikz I have completed the expert level. I am awaiting the graduation day.

Being an early student of Kidobotikz, can you describe your journey with Kidobotikz till now?
I joined Kidobotikz a couple of years ago. Back then, before joining Kidobotikz, I was quite interested in the concept of robotics. I was interested in the working principle behind things and so on. Seeing my curiosity, my mother enquired around to see if she could put my curiosity to good use. Upon being suggested by many about a new institute called Kidobotikz, she came here to find out more about what was taught. She found the Kidobotikz model interesting and got me enrolled here.

My case was altogether different though. I was under the assumption that Kidobotikz was going to teach us about some basics electronics and electrical concepts that was not too different from what I was gonna learn in school. So, I had an initial indifference towards the course. But only after sometime did I realize about the seriousness and the significance of what was being taught here. And here I am today after completing the expert level and awaiting my graduation.

Interesting. So, how do you think robotics has changed you?
Robotics has had a profound impact on me. I see things differently now, I imagine about things in a technical manner. I’ve been part of some amazing projects and built cool stuff. To me all this is quite amazing. More importantly, it has empowered me as a student.

How do your parents feel about you? And what does everyone at school think about your roboting skills?
My mom was the person responsible for me joining Kidobotikz. And with Dad, it’s been a healthy competition because I tell him jokingly that I can code in more languages than him. That could not have happened if I was not at Kidobotikz.

Sadly, at school they are not as appreciative of the robotics learning as one would expect. My friends are not on the same page as me as far as robotics is concerned. Maybe, they’ll be on board once they get a little older.

Can you tell a bit about the cute robot that you had built as a part of the Kolu celebrations here at Kidobotikz?
Actually, I had built the bot for my Expert level Creative test. The timing happened to coincide with Navaratri and that is a happy coincidence. It is a Biped, as in, it can walk on two legs. It has sensors in the front that help it sense the surroundings.

Are there any favourite robots of yours?
My favourite robot has to be the Line tracer robot. But I have no bias towards other robots. It’s just that line tracer robots appeal to me more.

I would like to know what your future plans are?
I have no plans yet. I am looking to take things one at a time.

Geek Speak: Mrithun Chockalingam

07:24 Posted by Anonymous 2 comments
It’s Saraswati pooja day and most of them young students must be happy! It’s the only mandated day of the year when students are requested to NOT touch their books! And it is something of a calm before the storm because most of these students will be burning their midnight oil the very next day, Vijayadasami, in time for schools that reopen.

But, roboting requires no books. So, there’s no embargo for robotics on Saraswathi Pooja day. This means most of the Kidobotikzians are here doing the same regular roboting stuff that they are used to doing. Meanwhile, we pick up from from where we left yesterday and cover students who have presented their Kolu-themed projects here at Kidobotikz. With us today is someone who has truly taken the art of Athithi Satkar, or Guest Hospitality, to a new level. He’s come up with an innovative way of serving Kumkum and Turmeric to the guests who visit his home for Navaratri. Meet Mrithun Chockalingam our Geek for the day.

Hi Mrithun! Can you tell us the inspiration behind your project?
For every kolu, neighbours and relatives visit our home. When they leave, it is customary for my mother to give them Kumkum and turmeric placed near the deity. I wanted to make it easy so that as and when the guests offered their prayers to the Idols they got offered the holy powders automatically. That was the inspiration behind this project.

To make it work, I placed the idol of Lord Ganesh in the middle and erected a small motor mounted umbrella behind him. If you notice the front, the two small cups of kumkum and turmeric are placed on small plates. These are actually connected to two BO motors that are concealed below the boxes. The motors are connected to IR sensors. So, when someone brings their palms near to Lord ganesha to touch his feet, the sensors detect the palms and the small motors rotate the containers above.

Inspiring! Must be interesting learning to know how to do all these!
Yes, all of these are quite interesting to make work. Thanks to my curiosity and basic knowledge of robotics, I was able to do this. Not just my parents, all the guests who visited my home were also equally impressed.

So, how’s your roboting experience at Kidobotikz and How did you actually join Kidobotikz
Thanks to Kidobotikz, I now know that Robotics is not as complex as portrayed. I am now in the Foundation level and it is exciting to know that from here onwards, I get to build cool robots like Sumo Robots and Hexapods.

What is your favourite Robot?
My favourite robots are Humanoids. In particular, I have a fascination for the ASIMO series of robots built by Honda.

What are your future ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future now that you are a budding roboticist?
I wanna be an Automobile designer when I grow up. I have a fascination for Cars and their designs. So, when I grow up that’s where I see myself. Also, now that I am into the field of robotics, I wanna explore the possibilities of Autonomous cars and cars that can be controlled with mobile phones.

Geek Speak: Balaji

07:35 Posted by Anonymous 3 comments
Ah, finally the weekend of Navaratri is here! It’s been a week full of roboting for most of these students! With the schools drawn to a close for the pooja holidays, students have been caught up in making robots in line with the festival season. With Kidobotikz also setting up a robotics Kolu on the premises, quite a lot of them pitched in and decided to display their Kolu-themed projects on the Kolu pedestal. Apart from this, an enthusiastic few have also taken to adorning the Kolu steps at their own homes with robots. A bunch of these young roboticists have taken videos of their Kolu-bots in action and uploaded them onto YouTube.

With us today is one of these fellas who has put his project on the Kolu stands at Kidobotikz. We enquire more about his project and his unique way of celebrating navaratri. Meet Balaji S. Rao, 3rd Grader at PSBB KK Nagar and a Kidobotikzian in the Foundation level. His project is a impressive looking figurine of Shri Ranganatha Swamy that is being fanned by a robot. Let’s learn more about him and his project . . . .

Hi Balaji! Can you tell us the reason behind your project?
Well, the tradition of Kolu is usually depicting scenes from mythology in the form of small dolls and figurines that can explain the story to guests and visitors during the Navaratri festival. I wanted to come up with something like that and some robotic effects to it. So, I made a slowly rotating fan that will look like someone is fanning the god. That is my project. For that I used a custom made fan blade and connected it to a BO motor via a long stick.

Very good! Can you tell me how you made this project?
It was my own idea. But then, i wanted some help with motor and mounting the fan. So, I took some guidance from my brother who is also a student here at Kidobotikz and some assistance from my faculty.

Can you tell us how goes your journey at Kidobotikz?
I am in the final stages of my Foundation level. I am hoping to finish the foundation level soon and commence the beginner level. Beginner level is where I get to work on robots with wheels and I am quite excited about the same.

What are your favourite robots?
My favourite robots are Bipeds, the ones that are capable of walking on two legs. ASIMO is the best robot according to me. Another favourite would be amazon’s Kiva.

What’re your future plans? Where do you want to study?
I want to become a robotics engineer. But I have not planned where I will study. I will probably ask my brother’s suggestion before doing that.

Geek Speak: Akash

07:42 Posted by Anonymous No comments
It’s a small weekend for Kidobotikz considering the fact that the makerspace will be on holiday tomorrow for Gandhi Jayanthi. But, Kidobotikzians are more than making up for it with putting in extra hours today. Students are here in droves to take up their robotics lessons in the earnest. With us today is a robotics pro who defines the word dashing. With his straightfaced style of answering and sharp accent he just lights up the conversation. This ends up intimidating the person sitting across and talking with this bond-esque boy wonder. He’s only in class 8 but has a way of answering questions that surely will make people think twice if they were talking to someone of age 14. Meet Akash, a nube to robotics but geek in every other way. He is our geek for the day.

Hey Akash! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone! I’m Akash, studying in class 8 at PSBB KK Nagar. Here at Kidobotikz, I have completed the Beginner level

Can you tell us how you ended up being a Kidobotikzian?
Well, I remember the day I joined Kidobotikz. It was on the 3rd of August. I had attended the Hindu Young world Summer camp which was conducted by Kidobotikz. After that I came with my parents to find out more about them. I got interested and joined.

So, what was your opinion about robotics before and after joining Kidobotikz?
Ever since I saw the movie Iron Man as a 3rd grade my perspective of robotics was that it was a very complex subject to learn. I always assumed that to be a robotics guy, you needed to be a Tony Stark and have all the resources at your disposal. Well, after joining Kidobotikz, I realise that Tony Stark is over rated (laughs). Thanks to Kidobotikz, I now know that every Tom and Harry can be a robotics guy if he has a Foundation Kit.

Interesting. So, how do you think robotics has changed you?
Robotics has changed me in ways that I couldn’t have expected. For one thing, it has definitely changed my perspective of people who are in the field of technology. More importantly, my conversations with them have become less juvenile and more mature.

Is there any particular kind of robot that fascinates you?
Yes. I am immensely fascinated with humanoids. They represent the cutting edge of technology in robotics. In particular, Honda’s ASIMO is a major area of interest for me.

And are there any kind of robots that you intend to build?
Ofcourse. I wanna build an exoskeleton type robot that can help the differently abled. This is what I see as my ultimate aim in robotics.

How was your KRG experience this time?
Given the fact that I was hardly a month into Kidobotikz when KRG-IX happened, I was all but a silent spectator over there (laughs). But I loved the electrifying atmosphere though.

That’s funny. To sum up, I would just like to know as to what your future plans are?
I have no plans yet. I have just found my footing in robotics. I wanna move along and see what more can I do.

Geek Speak: Abishek Shankar

05:58 Posted by Anonymous No comments
Terms like “Robotics Hobbyists” are becoming ubiquitous today. With the advent of informal learning or rather unconventional learning platforms, more and more students are trying out their hands at the hitherto unchartered areas of robotics and electronics. Nowhere is this change more pronounced than at Kidobotikz where you can find every other 8th grader working on an arduino board. The ones not working on the arduino are probably using a Viper or a Raspberry Pi.

The result is an ever growing pool of Kidobotikzians who develop wonderful working models and robots, not to mention the accolades these people receive after one upping the college guys and the pros in the areas of robots. With us today is a robotics pro whose age does not do justice to his stature. He’s only in class 11 but has already logged up a half life’s worth of robotics here at Kidobotikz. Meet Abhishek, an old timer at Kidobotikz and a robotics pro who is our geek for the day.

Hey Abishek! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone! I’m Abishek Shankar, studying in class 11 at PSBB KK Nagar.

Being an early student of Kidobotikz, can you describe your journey with Kidobotikz till now?
Well, I guess 3 years is a long time. I still remember why I joined Kidobotikz. I had a couple of friends who used to share the classroom benches with and roam around. When they joined this new place called Kidobotikz which was on the way from school, I got curious. Then I also joined here with the intention that I could hang out with them even after school. Today, as I look back, both of them have moved on with their academics catching up but for me robotics has become a very big part of my life. I had recently completed my Expert level and am awaiting the graduation day. Not just me, a lot has changed for Kidobotikz too. When I joined here, it was a small organization. Today, much to our delight they’ve scaled up well and are changing the lives of ever increasing number of students. I am happy for them and the entire community of Kidobotikzians.

Interesting. So, how do you think robotics has changed you?
Robotics has changed me in ways I could not have imagined. I see things differently now, I imagine about things in technical manner, the “how stuff works” part of it has become important to me now. I’ve done things that I never would’ve fathomed. I’ve taken part in Singapore Robo Games, IIT Shaastra and also won several events at NIT- Calicut. To me all this is quite amazing. More importantly, it has empowered me as a student.

How do your parents feel about you?
My parents have always been supportive of my choices. And when it comes to Kidobotikz, they’re outright supportive of what I do here. In the beginning when I used to participate in events, they were always encouraging me to participate in as many events as possible. Now that I know my way around robotics, the advise me to be picky with the events that I participate in, They ask me to participate in events where I have a sure shot of winning. This is an outlook that I am also inculcating in my participation.

So, why don’t you tell me about your most favourite roboting experience?
Well, if anything, it has to be the competition I took part in at NIT Calicut. It was a jolly good experience; one that I will always cherish. I managed to win a string of events - 1st Place in Line Tracer, 2nd in Robo Soccer, 3rd in Robo Sumo and two 5th places in Dirt Race and Project Expo events respectively.

Are there any favourite robots or dream robots of yours?
Well, my favourite robot has to be the Nao robot. On the other hand, I have a dream robot, one that i intend to design and develop. I want to develop a robot that can replace ball pickers at Tennis Courts. Playing tennis a lot has made me realise that the role of ball pickers is quite strenuous and it is time someone came up with an alternative.

That’s impressive. To sum up, I would just like to know as to what your future plans are?
Well I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur and now I have decided to that I will preneur in the field of robotics. As for my plans related to higher studies, I intend to go abroad and learn robotics at some of the universities renowned for their robotics programmes. So, working towards it.

Geek Speak: Ishwarya

06:01 Posted by Anonymous No comments
When we imagine the terms “Robotics engineer” or “Robotics Hobbyists”, our minds immediately race to a picturesque image of a young boy or gentleman who is meddling with gadgets and wires to develop a truly remarkable piece of machinery. One can almost feel sorry for having been a borderline chauvinist, for the world of robotics and computers is no longer limited to the dorms of young boys and cubicles of professional men. Women are increasingly obsessed in getting their palms greasy with solder, glue and what have you. Nowhere is this change more pronounced than at Kidobotikz where geek-princesses are a familiar sight. They’ve dropped their barbies and picked up their arduinos. This is the true empowerment that we talk about so often. Meanwhile back at Kidobotikz, I strike up a conversation with a young girl who has been quite engrossed in reading a book that has a title “Tatva” and is filled with rules. Upon inquiry she reveals that her classes for the day are over and she is awaiting her mother and reading about upcoming contests in the meantime. Meet Aishwarya, the reigning princess of robotics and our geek for the day.

Hey Aishwarya! Do you mind introducing yourself to our readers?
Hello everyone! I am Ishwarya, and my name starts with an ‘I’ not an ‘A’ (laughs). I study in class 8 of Jawahar Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School. At Kidobotikz, I am now in the expert level.

Can you tell us what led you to join Kidobotikz?
Nothing actually led me to join to kidobotikz. It just happened. On one of their enrollment drives they had distributed pamphlets outside our school. I received one of those pamphlets. It kinda piqued my curiosity. So, took it to my parents who were also interested in the idea of me learning robotics. That’s how I joined here.

That’s as simple as anyone would’ve put it. So, how has been Kidobotikz your experience?
To be honest, I’ve always been interested in science, in particular physics. I’ve always been curious to know more about the world we live in and the way things work. So, youtube used to a big hangout place for me. Joining Kidobotikz helped in a unique way. I was able to channel all of these curiousity into the Kidobotikz courseware and learn a great deal about technology. In particular, I got very interested in humanoid robots after joining Kidobotikz.

That’s interesting. So, what change in your attitude do you feel after joining Kidobotikz?
The day I joined Kidobotikz, I was under the assumption that I would be starting to work on humanoid robots. I assumed that robotics was some high tech activity which starts at a highly complex courseware that would only be getting tougher and tougher. Much to my surprise, here at Kidobotikz, the course started with the most fundamental of concepts such as basic electronics and mechanical. Only then did I realise that the knowledge required for building robots did not start at graduation level but in school. Kidobotikz helped me achieve that holistic perspective of the tech world.

I’m sure Team Kidobotikz feels elated by your compliments. Meanwhile, how was your KRG experience this time?
I participated in 4 events this time- Line Tracer, Manual Race, Robo Sumo, Balloon Bursters. While, I couldn’t win the events, I managed to give a tough opposition to all participants. I’m working on the positives and I hope to bag a win in the next edition. Amidst all this, I am also gearing up to participate in FTC.

So, what are your plans for the future? Any field of interest that you are looking forward to work in?
I’ve always loved physics, astronomy in particular. I’m very passionate about concepts like black holes, quantum physics. So, I wish to be a physicist. Hopefully, i will implement my knowledge of robotics in these fields as well.

Geek Speak: Guruprasad

06:20 Posted by Anonymous No comments
What best defines a Saturday evening? A calm, serene and ambient living room with some peaceful activity like listening to music or a some intensive hobby. That is if you are an adult. If you are student, saturday is the best time to blow off some steam after a gruelling week at school. It will be the ideal day to kick back with some robotics before you need to catch up with your assignments on Sunday. Kidobotikz is usually a place where robotics is used to kick back from the tiresome rigours of the week. Today is no different. There’s a trickle of students who are here to get themselves ready for various competitions. One can look around and notice sheets of paper scribbled with rough designs of sumo robots, race robots, project robots what have you. Amidst all this action, a puny young fella seems to be basking upon what he has developed. Having his name featured on the newsfeed of the kidobotikz app yesterday, he is here to show us what he had developed and tell more about himself. Meet Guru, my namesake and our geek for the day.

Hi Guru! Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I’m Guruprasad! I study in class 3 of GRT Mahalakshmi Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Senior Secondary School.

Can you tell us why and when did you join Kidobotikz?
I joined Kidobotikz on the 19th of August, 2016. I remember the date because I wrote it down on my notebook so that I don’t forget (laughs). My mom saw the advertisement for Kidobotikz on the newspaper and decided to bring me here. Now I am in the foundation level.

That is good. What do you like about Kidobotikz? And how do you feel about the concepts?
The most important thing I like about Kidobotikz is the way of teaching. The online platform is very helpful and when there are doubts, I can easily contact a faculty via the chat and learn more. Before joining here, if there was one thing I was scared about, it was the fact that I forget a lot of what I read. So, I was worried whether I will be remembering everything that I learn. But, thanks to the videos and animations, it is easy to remember every concept.

Why do you think learning robotics is important?
With Kidobotikz, I am learning very important concepts like Mechanics, Programming and Electronics. All of these are very important concepts themselves. When these are used in robots, that means robots are important too. Not only that, I am interested in becoming an entrepreneur. For that robotics is the best.

Can you tell me about the robot that you have brought here today?
I’ve assembled a unique tricycle robot with the components from my foundation level kit. The robot contains IR sensors on the front and back. This way, it will go in a straight line. When it comes close to a wall, it will automatically stop and move back. This way it can move around all directions and avoid collisions with obstacles.

Which is your favourite robot?
My favourite robots are humanoid robots. They require the best of technology to be built. That makes them my favourite.

What to do want to do when you finish schooling and college?
I have no plans for the future yet. I am just 9 years old (laughs).

Geek Speak: Keshav

06:21 Posted by Anonymous No comments
“The future belongs to the curious, The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it and turn it inside out.”

This interesting quote is by  Clay P. Bedford, a man who was responsible for some truly revolutionary projects like the Grand Coulee Dam. It quite crisply encapsulates the true importance behind imbibing the spirit of curiosity in students. Meanwhile, back at Kidobotikz, it’s a rather quiet friday evening. With the course having gone digital, the few students that are here today are the ones who are transition to their digital courseware or the ones who had some head-scratching doubts in their robotics courses last night. These are the young minds that put in fairly heavy amounts of time into robotics and try to outshine their peers. We meet one such young fella today; one who is quite bubbly, inquisitive and wide grinned. Meet Keshav, our geek for the day.

Hey Keshav! Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I’m Keshav. I am in the 3rd grade of PSBB KK Nagar.

Can you tell us why and when did you join Kidobotikz?
I came to Kidobotikz in 2013. I was a very small boy. I saw the board of Kidobotikz and came with dad here. I wanted to join but my parents felt that I was too young. So dad said No. I begged for 2 weeks and finally convinced dad to get me enrolled here.

That is good. What do you like the most about Kidobotikz? And what did you think about Kidobotikz before joining here?
That’s a funny story. Before joining Kidobotikz, I did not know much about robotics or basics. I thought they will give me a humanoid and ask me to make it work. Then finally, when I actually started the course, it was a surprise. I had to start by building robots that ran on wheels, then move on to robots that have legs and only then can i know enough to start developing a humanoid.

The best thing I like about Kidobotikz is the teachers. They are very friendly and teach very patiently.

What level are you in? And why do you like robotics?
Here, I am at the end of Junior Level- 3. I am now in the process of transitioning to the digital platform. I like robotics because I want to build one. I want to become a scientist in the field of robotics.

Which is your favourite robot?
I have no favourite robot. But i have a dream robot. I want to build a robot that can cook by itself and serve the food later on. This I will gift to my mother.

What to do want to do when you finish schooling and college?
I have no plans on what to do yet. But, my ambition in life is to become a robotics scientist.

Geek Speak: Anirudh

06:58 Posted by Anonymous No comments
Nothing beats the pleasure of engaging in a conversation with young tots who have a vision that matches those of adults. These motivated young minds stand out from the crowd with their level of curiosity, their unadulterated dreams for the planet. Such conversations are not only stress busters, but they actually make us rethink the priorities that we work towards. Kidobotikz is one such place where the abundance of such motivated 10 year olds is rather unquestionable. The student we are going to have a chat with is one such young fella. One who is quite young, energetic and enthusiastic with a flair for learning. Meet Anirudh, our geek for the day.

Hey Anirudh! Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I’m Anirudh. I study in class 3 of PSBB KK Nagar.

Can you tell us why and when did you join Kidobotikz?
I came to Kidobotikz in 2013. I was a very small boy. My cousin, Gurunathan, who studied here told about Kidobotikz to my parents. They brought me here.

That is good. What do you like the most about Kidobotikz? And what did you think about Kidobotikz before joining here?
Before joining Kidobotikz, I did not know about robotics and I did not know what is electronics. Now I can identify every component and build a robot. That is what I like best about Kidobotikz.

What are level are you in? And why do you like robotics?
Here, I am at the end of Junior Level- 3. I joined in 2013 and completed two levels. Then I took a one year break. After that, I again came back and started Junior Level-3. Today is my last class for this level. Next I will become a student on the digital platform. I like robotics because I want to build one. I want to become an automobile engineer and build a new eco-friendly robot. That robot will be non polluting and will clean the air.

Good for you. Did you come to KRG this time? How was it?
It was a very good KRG. I participated in all the junior level events and I won two events. I won the 1st place in Roborace and 2nd place in Push'n’Drop.

Which is your favourite robot?
My favourite robot is the wired robot that I learned to build here. I like being able to control it like a pet.

What to do want to do when you finish schooling and college?
I want to study robotics at IIT. That is my ambition. What I will do after that, I have not planned yet.

Geek Speak: Varun Srinivas

When one observes the various students that assemble for a class or a session, one cannot help but wonder the diversity each one of them bring to the gathering. These young minds which may vary from being all knowing to all observing add a unique flavour to the classroom. While the faculty is the one who bears the brunt of the flavour these 10 somethings bring to the room, for onlookers it is always a sight to behold as knowledge dissipates through the class. Equally interesting, or amusing, is the attitudes displayed by these students. Some of them take pride in their capabilities and wares. These are the ones that teachers find hard to contain. There are still others who are quite unassuming and hold their foot steady even after being extraordinary in their performance. These are the ones that who take a deep breath before every action of their and ensure that they bring a calming influence to everyone around them. Today we meet someone who has quite a calming influence on everyone around him. Meet Varun, a “stealth” roboticist and our focus for today’s geek speak.

Hey Varun! Do you mind introducing yourself to our readers?
Hello everyone! I am Varun Srinivas, the “Stealth” roboticist. I study in class 7 of PSBB KK Nagar.

Can you tell us what led you to join Kidobotikz?
Well,it’s not a very long story. Kidobotikz has always been in the vicinity of KK Nagar and had been glancing on their banners for quite some time on my way back from school. One day I just walked into the center and inquired about the courses. Not long after that did I join here...

That’s as simple as anyone would’ve put it. So, did you find you were looking for at Kidobotikz?
To be honest, before joining Kidobotikz, I was quite blank about what to expect and what to learn. I wasn’t exactly sure whether robotics was the way to go about. But then, all those doubts in me were laid to rest at the end of the first class. I was sold on the whole idea of learning robotics concepts because it was made comprehensible in the class.

Well, I’m sure Team Kidobotikz is happy with your compliments. Meanwhile, how’s your level progressing?
I’m in the advanced level. Unlike most students who’ve been here for more than a year or so, i am a relatively new entrant. I joined here only in the month of April. Kidobotikz conducted a summer camp where I completed the first two levels. That way I had a headstart over most others.

What’s one thing you love about Kidobotikz?
Their faculty. Their faculty are all so patient. They help us in patiently understanding each concept and provide us with the time to grasp them at our learning levels. This for me is the most favourite aspect of Kidobotikz. They ensure that no one is left behind.

Good hear. Moving on, how was your KRG experience this time?
It was a very memorable experience. This was my first KRG and I managed to make it to the quarterfinals of the all events. While the fact that I didn’t win did sting a little, I still happened to take back a lot of positives from the event. If there was one place where I went wrong, it is the fact that I used lead acid batteries instead of LiPo batteries. This affected the weight of my robots in key situations.

For the final question, what are your favourite kind of robots and what are future plans after schooling?
Well, my plans after schooling are still in planning stage. I haven’t given them much thought. I’d like to take it as it comes. For, the first question, My favourite bots would be race robots and hexapods. These are the ones that I am capable of building and hence they are my favourites.

When one thinks of schooling and the fun associated with it, it is usually only till grade ten. All the fun and frolic the school life can give is usually done by the end of class 10. After that it’s only board exams, then a major leap in the toughness subjects in class 11 and bam comes class 12 where you find yourself preparing for the board exams yet again. Before you know, all your exams are done, counselling is done and you are already a student of some university of repute. But what many of us fail to realize during this time is that education is equally fun and has to be viewed from a holistic perspective that makes it worth the effort of going through all the hardships in the formative years. The ones who take a breath and calm down before deciding on what they want to do in these years are the ones who tend to balance both their fun life and careers. Today we meet someone who thinks he has taken such a stride by joining Kidobotikz. Meet Anirudh, a young roboticist and our focus for today’s geek speak.

Hey Anirudh! Do you mind introducing yourself to our readers?
I’m Anirudh. I’m in the 11th grade. And I belong to Devi Academy Senior Secondary School.

Can you tell us what led you to join Kidobotikz?
My introduction to Kidobotikz is a rather interesting story. I used to live in the vicinity of KK Nagar. So, I’ve known Kidobotikz ever since their inception. And I have always been pestering my parents about getting me enrolled here. But when I asked mom for the first time, she wanted me to concentrate on my studies because she wasn’t sure if I would fit in or was robotics a good choice for me. Then, I let it go. But as it turns out, my parents had made enquires on Kidobotikz and had understood what was being done here. So, as a surprise for my 15th birthday, my parents brought me to the Kidobotikz center and told me that I had been enrolled here.

Interesting. So, how does it feel to be a robotics hobbyist? And what impact has Kidobotikz had on you ?
Well, since I am in class 11, I have a extensive syllabi to study as it is. Thanks to Kidobotikz, I have actually learnt a few of these concepts before hand. Also, it is very helpful when it comes to learning concepts because I can now imagine how every theory plays out. This way, the learning becomes easy. Even otherwise, Robotics is a much needed diversion for me after a hard week at school.

Moreover, Kidobotikz has also had one profound impact on students like me. Now that I actually know what the crux of engineering would be like, it helps in the decision making process when it comes to the choice of field for my undergrad studies.

Now that you say Kidobotikz has helped you with the decision making, what have you decided to do for your graduation?
I’ve always been interested with flying, aviation and the whole gamut of soaring in the sky. So, I’ve kept tabs on things happening in the aviation and aerospace industries. More importantly, I am very interested in the work of NASA, SpaceX and others. So, I am thinking of pursuing aerospace engineering. As of now, I’ve set my sights on the Indian Institute of Space science and Technology(IIST) Thiruvananthapuram.

Geek Speak: Rakshin

07:48 Posted by Anonymous No comments
It’s Sunday and weekend is already over before it began. It’s 11th hour for all those who’ve been rather lax since friday evening. Notebooks being scribbled with hurried assignments and high intensity preparations for the upcoming weekly tests are rather a characteristic of a late sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, back at Kidobotikz, it is business as usual as far Sundays are concerned. Batches of students are here taking their robotics lessons in the earnest. It is a rather leisurely class hour for them as most of them are in the middle of their learning courses where everything seems to be progressing at optimum pace. I enter the first classroom and discover someone who seems rather docile. He seems to have finished the assignment his trainer had asked him to complete and is now just quiet and unassuming. I request him to step out of the classroom and engage in a brief conversation with him. And his name is rather unique as well.

Hey Rakshin! Why don’t you temme a bit about yourself and your path to Kidobotikz?
I am Rakshin. I study in class 8 at PSBB Millennium. I joined Kidobotikz in the month of April this year. Back here at Kidobotikz I am in the advanced level.

You joined in April and are already in the advanced level? That’s rather impressive! How did that happen?
Well, I came to know of Kidobotikz through a friend of mine named Shreyas. I visited the center around the month of april and found out that there was a summer camp that was being conducted during that time. I managed to complete 2 levels within those 10 days. That’s how it happened.

So, describe your experience of being a roboticist at Kidobotikz?
Before joining Kidobotikz, my expectation was to do something “cool”. Here, I discovered more than just “cool”. Robotics has changed a lot in me. It has made quite smart. I can actually feel myself getting smarter everyday. All thanks to Kidobotikz.

Interesting. So, how did you take part in KRG? And how was your experience?
This was my first KRG. Thereby, it was a wonderful learning experience. I took part in almost all events- Autotransbot, Autonomous race, Balloon Bursters, Temple Run seniors. I knew I wasn’t gonna win in these events, but it did give me a wonderful learning curve.

Impressive! So, what kinda robots capture your imagination?
I love all kinds of robots, but I have a major liking towards Bionic Arms. According to me, they represent the future way of how we will work and use robots. I am actually planning to try and build one of these when I gain the required resources.

My best wishes for you! To conclude our chat, I’d like to know your future plans and ambitions when you graduate from Kidobotikz and high school
Well, I haven’t figured out much. But, I wanna be able to join MIT. Ever since I saw their four legged robot gallop across obstacles, i’ve been inspired to do my robotics studies there.

Geek Speak: Mukhil

08:36 Posted by Anonymous No comments
It is Saturday and brings with it comes a weekend of catching up with friends and partners in mischief. However, as far as Kidobotikz is concerned the mischief and shenanigans are usually limited to the robots. The students take pleasure in enabling them though. Meanwhile, we are back at the makerspace to meet up with a duo who have been working on their respective schools projects since yesterday evening. We met one of them, Ahilesh, who was a rather interesting lad. His buddy, Mukhil is with us today and we’re going to try and find more about him.

Hey Mukhil! May I know why’re you here today?
Well, as my friend Ahilesh told you yesterday, there’s a project expo that is about to be held. That is why we’ve slogged since last evening to get our respective projects up and ready.

Interesting. So, I assume Ahilesh and you go way back?

Well, not really. While Ahilesh and I are schoolmates, the two of us are actually in different sections. He’s in the ‘A‘ section while I study in section ‘B’. so, until I joined Kidobotikz, I really had no inkling as to he was here. Besides, he’s been at Kidobotikz for a long time now. I’m a relatively new comer. But, the time we spend time at Kidobotikz is one I try to know more about robotics from him.

So, do you mind describing your journey to Kidobotikz?
Well, I have to thank my dad who found out about Kidobotikz through a friend of his. He then asked me whether I was interested in getting myself enrolled here. I was all yes for it. I even remember the week I joined Kidobotikz. It was on the 3rd week of January this year. I know that because the next week was KRG.

Interesting. So, how does it feel to be a kidobotikzian? And could you elaborate on your school project?
I love it here at Kidobotikz. The teachers are quite wonderful and they take efforts to ensure that we get our concepts right. Moreover, I am always aware that the things I do here at Kidobotikz puts me ahead of my classmates back at school. That, for me is quite exhilarating.

Impressive! So, what kinda robots capture your imagination?
Racerobots are my passion. It is impressive to see them run. Another huge favourite is Quadcopters. They are such a marvel. And with drone technology coming into its own, I hope to see more of these around.

My best wishes for you! To conclude our chat, I’d like to know your future plans and ambitions when you graduate from Kidobotikz and high school
Well, I haven’t planned much. I just like to take things as they come. So, as of now, my plans are to learn robotics. Let’s see what comes after that.

Geek Speak: Ahilesh

Friday is here and along with it has descended the weekend mindset. Far more that the weekend, it’s the weekend which brings the feel of peace and serenity, for people know that they have a whole weekend of joy ahead of them. Meanwhile, back at Kidobotikz’s classrooms, students have started to dot the classroom with their excited faces. They are here to attend their classes. But the makerspace of Kidobotikz paints quite a different picture. It bears a rather deserted look and has only two young students who’ve taken the corner to themselves. While the makerspace being empty could simply be attributed to the fact that it is still 4:30 PM on a friday evening, the presence of these two young kidobotikzians who seem to be unto themselves seems rather intriguing. Turns out they’re here for a purpose and their hands are full. I decide to strike up a chat with one of them and the other concedes to talk to me tomorrow. Meet Ahilesh who took some time to indulge in the “Geek Speak”.

Hey Ahilesh! May I know why’re you here today?
Well there’s a project expo that is about to be held at our school in a few weeks from now. That is why I’ve come here to Kidobotikz to develop a project for the expo.

Which school do you belong to, if I may ask?
Well, I am a 9th Grader at Kolaperumal Chetty Vaishnav Senior Secondary School. 9B to be precise (laughs).

Well, that’s a rather long school name for me to remember. But I guess I won’t be asking much about your school, so I guess that saves me the trouble of remembering the name.

So, do you mind describing your journey to Kidobotikz?
Well, my introduction to Kidobotikz is a rather interesting story. I have always been obsessed with robotic sciences and have even tried to do a lot of experiments as Kid. But, I had always longed for a formal robotic training course. Being a school kid was a major impediment. But, as chance would have it, I once was having a stroll on the street and happen to stumble upon a pamphlet that was lying down on the street. I saw the name Kidobotikz on it and immediately took home the pamphlet. (I) used the number given on the sheet and gave them a call. Not long after that was I a Kidobotikzian.

Interesting. So, how does it feel to be a robotics hobbyist? And could you elaborate on your school project?
Roboting for me is a passionate experience. Thanks to Kidobotikz now I can actually do roboting the proper way. Also, it helps me see things on a holistic level. Things of everyday life don’t appear as just magical gadgets but actual marvels of engineering. As for my school project, it is a gesture controlled cleaning robot. We’ve used the stock robot and incorporated functionality into it which makes it capable of being controlled using gestures. This way the user can clean the surrounding using nothing but gestures.

Impressive! So, what kinda robots capture your imagination?
Well, I’ve always felt amazed by Honda’s ASIMOs. They represent the hotbed of cutting edge innovations that is Humanoid robotics. Another major inspiration is the work of Boston Dynamics. Their work is truly magnificent.

My best wishes for you! To conclude our chat, I’d like to know your future plans and ambitions when you graduate from Kidobotikz and high school
Well, I wanna be a robotics engineer. That much I am sure about. Where I plan to study and what I plan to specialize in is something that I am still not sure of.

Geek Speak: Charan

08:00 Posted by Anonymous No comments
It’s Sunday evening and the KRG makerspace is back to it’s full capacity with students relaxing with ahead for their week. But the relaxation isn’t exactly one of somnolence. They’re relaxing with their robots. They’re just trying out new ideas on their stock robots and exploring ways to upgrade them. A separate group of seniors are brainstorming for their upcoming project- Swachbot 2.0. They’re working on the next version of Kidobotikz’s flagship robot. Between their robotic courses and robotics projects, the platter of these young gentlemen is filled for agendas for the evening. Most of them will be here well until the makerspace closes for the day. Meanwhile, I catch up with a Kidobotikz senior. “Senior” here is a relative term considering the fact that is only in his tenth grade. But, his accomplishments surely suggest otherwise. He’s had a rather momentous KRG with 3 wins. Meet Charan, PSBBian, Robotics wizard and a proud Kidobotikzian.

Hey Charan! Why don’t you temme a bit about yourself and your path to Kidobotikz?
As you said, I am Charan, Class 10, PSBB KK.Nagar. Back here at Kidobotikz, I finished my Expert level recently and am now awaiting the Graduation ceremony. My association with Kidobotikz dates way back to 2013. Kidobotikz back then was relatively new and had a smaller center. I was a walk-in. I feel in love as soon as I came here. Robotics was a relatively new interest for me and thanks to Kidobotikz it has now turned into a passion.

Interesting. So, how does it feel to be a robotics enthusiast here at Kidobotikz?
Well, robotics for me is a highly empowering experience. I get to feel like a grown up doing all kinds of grown up things. The whole aspect of learning through robotics as a process appeals to me immensely. I have learnt concepts that are just mindblowing for a student of my age. Considering the fact that I’ve managed to learn them makes me feel great about myself.

So, how was your KRG experience this time?
Well, this was a KRG I would remember for a long time. I made it a point to participate in all 7 of the senior events. I managed to win 2 events, Robo Sumo where I was placed first and Auto Transbot where I came 2nd. Although I narrowly missed out on the overall champion. But the fact that I was nominated for it is a great positive that I will be taking back this time.

Why are you here this weekend, if I may ask?
Actually, there are a lot of roboting events this upcoming season. There’s the Singapore Robo Games, the event at NIT-Calicut and a few others. I am here to plan for these events and see how I can participate differently this time. More importantly, the Swachbot 2.0 project is underway. So I am here to brainstorm for it as well.

That’s interesting! So, can you temme what’s your most favourite thing about Kidobotikz?
Well, the best thing I love about Kidobotikz is the atmosphere. I have always been a techie from my young age. Kidobotikz has just kept that curiosity alive. More importantly, the ambiance that I have here at Kidobotikz is something I love. With all the tools around and faculty to support, it is a paradise for curious learners like me.

Moving on, why don’t you temme if there is a particular kind of robot that you have a fascination for?
Sumo robots are my favourite. They represent raw power in the battle arena which is something that impresses me.

So, what do you plan to do when you graduate from high school?
Well, that’s an interesting question. My passion always keeps oscillating between Computers and Robotics. Before joining Kidobotikz, I was more interested in computers, gadgets and the whole gizmo. For a long time after joining Kidobotikz, I was caught up with the fantasy of robotics. Now, I am again leaning towards computers. So, I really am not sure.

Geek Speak: Siddhartha

09:10 Posted by Anonymous No comments
Students that usually visit Kidobotikz are of a very different kind. They are usually very conservative with words. The thinkers that they are, they usually are of the introverted kind who prefer to run conversation on lesser. At least that is what was believed until today. All that perspective would be turned on its head if one met this young gentleman whose pride for robotics and his exploits in that field are quite immense. He’s back here at Kidobotikz after KRG to plan for a next event (which he prefers to keep confidential).

Meet Siddhartha.N, a robotics prodigy who is a star back at Kidobotikz. He graduated way back in December 2014 and yet is a frequent visitor here to stay in touch with the vast student community of Kidobotikz. For him coming to Kidobotikz is something that he loves because it is here he discovered his passion. This robotics wizard has quite a few number of wins to his name at various national level robotic contests and has already won a few. To name a few, he’s the youngest champion in the history of IIT-Madras’s Annual Tech fest-Shaastra. He participated there in an open robotics event and won. Even as we speak, he is busy checking updates on a whatsapp group where people are discussing about the match where he was adjudged the winner. He was also a part of this edition of KRG where he participated in a number of events. A brief chat with him truly reveals how far this wunderkind has come.

Hey Siddhartha! Must’ve been a wonderful KRG experience for you!
KRG is always an amazing experience for me. With the two day format, this edition of KRG was a success for Kidobotikz. For me though I will have to rue over the fact that I lost most of the events by a whisker. That is something that I am not gonna forget for quite sometime. But things happen and I look forward to the next upcoming events to make my mark felt.

That’s quite alright. Compared to what you’ve achieved with the IIT-M wins and NIT-Calicut wins, one off event isn’t all that bad.

So, why don’t you tell me about your experience with Kidobotikz and what Kidobotikz means to you?
Well, before Kidobotikz happened, I don’t even remember what I was up to. I mean Kidobotikz happened to me by sheer fate. My dad, who is a major encouragement for me in every aspect, one day came back home and told me about this place. He had come across one of the fliers and had checked it out. He asked me if I was willing to give it a try. I came, I saw and was consumed. Today I cannot believe that things like electronics, mechanics and programming are a major part of my life.

Interesting. So, how do you think robotics has changed you?
Robotics has changed me in ways I could not have imagined. I see things differently now, I imagine about things in technical manner, the “how stuff works” part of it has become important to me now. It basically changed my personality. Even in terms of adulation, I’ve managed quite a lot of attention. I’ve been featured in several articles, newspapers and was once even on TV after Kidobotikz won the CNBC award. I owe all of this to Kidobotikz greatly. When I joined Kidobotikz, it was a small organization with a meagre strength of 8 staff. Today the organization has expanded with a lot of faculty and more number of events. I am happy for them and the entire community of Kidobotikzians.

My best wishes for you! To conclude our chat, I’d like to know your future plans and ambitions when you graduate from high school.
Well, after much thought I’ve decided that I will be doing Mechatronics in my graduation course. I have still not decided where I wanna do my undergrad but I’m absolutely sure that it will be in robotics or an allied subject.
